2025 Tax Referendum Vote

THE TAX REFERENDUM

There will be an item on your ballot asking you to vote YES or NO on adding a 1% sales tax on sales in McLean County.  The proceeds from that sales tax will be distributed to area school districts.

Reasons to vote NO

  1. This tax would have an impact on all residents, including low-income families who cannot afford yet another burden on their cost of living.
  2. Once a tax is in place it will never go away.
  3. The schools have violated election law by using their communication network to promote this election issue. They also referred to the tax as a 1 cent tax which was a deceptive practice. They should not be rewarded for abuse of election law.
  4. The promise made of property tax relief is only that- a promise- nothing to guarantee that will happen and every reason to believe it will be forgotten. The manner in which the schools have violated ethics and laws in promoting this vote does not speak well to the likelihood they will keep the promise of tax relief.
  5. School enrollments have been in decline since 2018.
  6. The property values upon which the bulk of the funding for schools come from will continue to rise thus giving schools more money each year.
  7. We currently pay over $16,000 dollars per student every year on average for education yet continue to see a decline in reading and math level.
  8. When schools follow federal law and disband the DEI program and staff a large amount of savings in cost will occur.
  9. Our schools need better management, not more money.
